Scotty made the fist tighter and tighter until his hand ached with pain. Slowly, he relaxed his hand. His voice trembled from anger as he spoke. "Stop repeating that and answer my question."

"You've hurt me, baby," she said, her Uttle-girl voice returning. "Please don't make me hurt you more."

"More? What do you mean by morey Shannon?" he screamed. "You're admitting it? You're admitting that you did it?"

"Come over tonight, and we'll talk about it," she whispered.

"What? Are you serious — ?"

"Come over," she repeated playfully. "There's no one here but me. I'm very lonely, baby."

"Shannon — I — I'm going to call the pohce," he said, surprising himself. He didn't know if he was serious or not. He hadn't really thought about it. The words just popped out.

"The pohce?" her voice grew even tinier. Then, to his surprise, she giggled. "My brothers wouldn't like that."

"I don't care about your brothers," he declared. "I've decided. I'm calling the police."

There was a pause. Then she said softly, "No, you're not. Because then Lora would find out. Wouldn't she? And her parents. I'd have to tell everyone then, wouldn't I? Everyone would know about you and me, baby."
